IE9: No problems. IE8: One weird z-index. IE7: Polyfilling until the doctor comes. But ~3h (10% of project time) for IE is very good.

Tricking IE with negative z-indexes feels so dirty when it comes to stacking of pseudo elements. But since this is dirty business I am fine.
